The city of Chicago is installing new lamp post that will measure air quality, light intensity, sound volume, heat, precipitation and wind. They will also monitor cell phone traffic to count the number of people who pass by. People concerned about privacy need not worry the project is designed to store the data it collects in anonymous forms. This is now the first time a city has collected large amounts of data from its streets but it could be the first time a permanent infrastructure has been added across an entire urban landscape.
